TD Alum, Shirley Paulino, Battles Illness

In February of 2016, at just 26, Talent Development alumna, Shirley Paulino, was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Shirley has Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, which is a hormonal positive cancer. This means the cancer is feeding off her ovaries, which she eventually has to remove or suppress. She doesn’t have any kids, so this will undoubtedly affect her chances of having a family in the future.

Due to the size of the tumors, and given that her grandmother had breast cancer twice, Shirley has bravely made the tough decision of having a double mastectomy and reconstruction.

To make matters worse, Shirley was recently laid-off due to closure of the office where she worked: leaving her without income.

Shirley’s insurance won’t cover all of her treatment or assist her with the living expenses she has to keep up with as shShirley Paulinoe undergoes treatment. This fund is to help her with the medical expenses her insurance will not cover and the living expenses.

If you can imagine having all of these troubles piling up, you can assume that she is worried and anxious about what is to come.

Still, if you see her today, you would not guess any of this, she is the same happy and positive person she has always been. She is smiling, making jokes and as strong as ever. She recently said that this has allowed her to dig deeper into herself and figure out why God chose this path for her and she is confident she will come out stronger than ever.
