Art Studio (B.A., B.F.A.)
B.F.A. Curriculum
The B.F.A. degree provides more in-depth professional training for art students. A total of 120 credits is required for graduation, including at least 72 credits in the major (57 in art studio, and 15 in art history).
Foundation Courses
For the B.F.A. degree, you should plan to complete the following courses in your first year:
- ART 207: Drawing I (3 credits)
Two courses (6 credits) from:
- ART 101: Two-Dimensional Studio (3 credits)
- ART 103: Three-Dimensional Studio (3 credits)
- ART 105: 4D (Time-Based) Studio I (3 credits)
One Art History course:
- ART 251: Introduction to Art History: Ancient-Medieval (3 credits)
or - ART 252: Introduction to Art History: Renaissance-Modern (3 credits)
B.F.A. majors should complete at least 24 credits in art studio courses, and at least 6 credits in art history by the end of the sophomore year.
Sophomore Review
In the first semester of your sophomore year, you will participate in ART 002: Sophomore Review, a special evaluation set up to provide you with timely feedback from faculty once you have completed the foundation courses. When you register for ART 002, you will submit a Statement of Purpose form, and will prepare a portfolio of 15-20 of your best works from foundation courses.
An additional 18 credits must be selected from 200-level ART courses, and an additional 27 credits must be selected from 300-level ART courses.
Other Required Courses
B.F.A. students must take 15 credits in art history, including 9 credits at the 300 level or above, 3 credits of which must be selected from the following modern or contemporary art history courses:
- ART 331: The African-American Artist in Context: A Cultural and Historical Survey II
- ART 361: Modern Art
- ART 362: Contemporary Art
- ART 364: American Art
- ART 374: Topics in Film
- ART 375: Topics in the History of Photography
- ART 380: Topics in Art and Architectural History (with topic approved by chair)
- ART 480: Advanced Topics in European and American Art (with topic approved by chair)
Many students choose to do an internship in their junior or senior year. Consult with your advisor before registering for ART 477 Art and Art History Internship.
Outstanding students may be permitted by the department to substitute other studio courses for the 100 and 200 level courses listed above after a portfolio review arranged by their departmental advisor.
