Brittney Darcy ’21

Brittney Darcy ’21, Social Media Marketing Manager for Moore House Design x ROWEAM, turned her lifelong love of social media into a career. Throughout her time at URI, she took advantage of all opportunities, including Social Media Agency internship and hands-on courses.

How did you get started in Social Media marketing?
I’ve been on social media since I was young. I loved it when Vine was a thing; I loved creating, and I loved editing and finding that ‘wow’ factor. So ever since Vine started (or even MySpace, Facebook, and Instagram) I fell in love with every single thing about social media. So I thought to myself, how do I make this into a living? What do I need to do? At the time, I was in New York with my sister, who was a makeup artist, and I was doing public relations and social media for her, which made me believe that I could do this. So I applied to the URI and it’s been amazing ever since.

How did URI help prepare you for your career?
The professors were phenomenal and the education is very hands on. So any question that you have for if you’re stuck on, you know, let’s say I’m in a social media class, and I don’t know how to make this really great visually, or make the caption interesting, and have that storytelling. To professors would sit with you and go through their expertise. And the professors that I had were just phenomenal, especially Leah Pisari, who runs the Social Media Agency, too. She is such a great leader and I’ve learned so much from her.

What is one piece of advice you would give to a current URI student?
Make the most out of every single opportunity, and take the opportunity to talk to a professor that you really like. There was one professor I really admired so I decided to take a chance to ask her about her background and how she got to URI. Learning about a professor’s life story and their life experience really helped push me forward.

What is one of your favorite memories from URI?
Anything with Leah Pisari. She really made my experience at URI very special and I learned a lot from her in my internship experience. She gave me the autonomy and freedom to do what I wanted to do with social media, and she believed in my vision.

What is one of your favorite parts about your career?
Right now I’m doing a photoshoot and it’s so cool. I get to experiment and have fun.  I think that’s the whole point of social media; you get to show people your vision. With social media and marketing, you see what sticks and from there you keep moving and evolving ways to tell a story.
