A Philosophical Look at Black Music

URI’s Department of English presents Lewis Gordon, Professor of English at the University of Connecticut, for this talk on “A Philosophical Look at Black Music” on Tuesday, March 17, 2020, at 4:00pm in Swan Hall 154. It is free and open to the public.

Born from the misery of enslavement, Black music is at its core an assertion of freedom in countries that refused to admit the humanity and value of Black people. Professor Gordon’s talk will examine the philosophical implications of this music, stressing the importance of art for human resilience in the face of historical misery and metaphysical homelessness.

Lewis R. Gordon is an Afro-Jewish philosopher, political thinker, educator, and musician.
