Feminist Struggles in a U.S. Colony: Women, Community, and Activism in Puerto Rico

This event, a conversation with La Colectiva Feminista, will be held on Thursday, March 26 from 11am-12:15pm in Edwards Auditorium.

Known as La Cole, this collective is a Black feminist political organization founded by university students in Puerto Rico in 2013.

Since its founding La Cole has been a presence in the Puerto Rican social and political spheres advocating for gender justice and the rights of vulnerable populations. A few of La Cole’s public policy demands include that a State of Emergency be declared to account for the high rates of femicide; requiring training for police officers investigating gender violence; addressing transphobia; including a gender perspective in the K-12 curriculum, along with teacher training; and, acknowledging the diverse composition of families in terms of sexual orientation.

Their activism has been featured in the New York Times, Teen Vogue, and Open Democracy, among many other forums.

This event is free and open to the URI public.
