Why did you choose URI and the sociology and anthropology programs?
I chose URI for the beautiful and welcoming campus as well as close proximity to beaches nearby. The sociology and anthropology programs were enticing based on the variety of interesting classes that are provided. Within my classes I was able to do field work at a housing court in Providence and engage with important populations from the nearby community. The hands-on experience that was provided in my classes set URI apart for me.
What is something special about the program at URI?
The sociology program at URI is special as real-world events and experiences are constantly connected to the concepts you are learning about. Within various classes, you are able to participate in field work and meet with members of the community as a built-in part of class. This program has broadened my worldview and perspective on people around me and greater society. The support of the faculty is also instrumental in ensuring success among all students in the major.
What is your favorite memory at URI?
My favorite memory at URI is traveling with the Women’s Ultimate Frisbee team Disky Business. Traveling and playing with this team throughout my college career has led to important friendships that I will carry with me for many years to come.
What are your post-graduation plans?
After graduation I will continue to work in Resident Engagement at a Skilled Nursing Facility in South Kingston while taking a gap year before likely attending graduate school for social work. I plan to focus on human-services related careers focused on helping others.
What is something you would tell your first-year self?
I would tell my freshman year self to get more involved on campus! Once I joined a club sport and attended more office hours with my professors I made many meaningful friendships and academic connections that provided significant support during my time at URI. Being connected within the campus community and the department of your major is essential. Never hesitate to reach out to faculty.
