Students wishing to apply for a Flagship Scholarship for Summer 2026 should submit their application by April 6, 2026.
The following are Flagship-approved summer programs:
Domestic Summer:
– Indiana University (IU) Chinese Workshop
– Middlebury Language Schools – Chinese
– URI Summer Program – CFIP
Overseas Summer (Taiwan):
– ICLP
– Tamkang University (TKU)
– American Councils Taiwan Intensive Summer Language Program (TISLP)
– Mandarin Training Center (MTC)
– Harvard Taipei Academy
– CET Taiwan
The application requires you to explain your reasons for applying to your program of choice, provide an honest assessment of your financial situation, and indicate whether you are applying for external scholarships. In addition, you will be asked to explain why you should be considered for scholarship funding from the URI Chinese Flagship Program and how your future professional goals align with the mission and needs of the Flagship Program and federal service.
Each Flagship student’s Flagship Scholarship amounts vary depends on the following criteria, and the amount awarded to students will not cover the entire cost of attendance. As such, it is highly recommended that you apply to non-Flagship scholarships to help completely fund your Chinese studies.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Current URI Chinese Flagship Student
- Student will be attending a Flagship-approved summer program
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.4
- Achieve the following Chinese proficiency benchmarks, based on the student’s current course level:
– For students in CHN 112: Novice High
– For students in CHN 212: Intermediate Low/Mid
– For students in CHN 312: Intermediate High - Current performance in Chinese courses
- Commitment to the Flagship Program, demonstrated through:
– involvement in extracurricular activities related to the target language and culture
– leadership and community involvement - Application for other scholarships or awards (e.g., Gilman, Freeman-ASIA, Boren, Demers)
