Volunteer Internship hosted by Community Partners
Upon completion of the Food Recovery Course, you will begin to volunteer in the community. Gain hands on food recovery experience supporting the good work of several inventive nonprofits having a huge impact in Rhode Island. Volunteer opportunities will divert food from the waste stream and feed people in need and will take place on farms, in local restaurants, at compost hubs, in community kitchens, and more! Throughout the course you will be introduced to the community partners and the volunteer opportunities that will be offered at those locations. You will choose where and when you engage your 40 hours of volunteer efforts! Volunteering is a great way to inspire your community to make the most of your food by participating in demonstrations, zero waste events, composting projects, etc. As a URI Food Recovery volunteer you may choose to:
- Collect unharvested food from farms for donation to local food pantries with Hope’s Harvest RI
- Rescue leftover food from local restaurants with RI’s newest food recovery organization, Rescuing Leftover Cuisine Rhode Island
- Build capacity at newly developed community compost hubs with Groundwork RI’s Harvest Cycle
- Assist with canning workshops in the West End with the Sankofa Initiative
- Collect data about trash, recycling, and compost generated in your home with Clean Ocean Access
- Support the establishment of composting sites across Providence with Zero Waste Providence
- More to come !
