In this capture, meet Ahmiya Cacapit and JP Walsh. Ahmiya is a student at the University of Guam and a University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography SURFO student. SURFO is the Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship in Oceanography program. JP is the director of the Coastal Resources Center and Ahmiya’s advisor for the SURFO summer. This summer, they are researching coastal plastic pollution. The original plan was to study plastic and micro plastic pollution in Narragansett Bay, but due the Covid-19 pandemic, Ahmiya was not able to travel to Rhode Island. Together, JP and Ahmiya adjusted the project for Ahmiya to research plastic pollution in Guam. She visits eight sites, collecting data, observing trends and tracking the pollution.
