Biography

Brian was the Senior Coastal Resources Manager at CRC.  He served as the Project Manager for the USAID/Ghana Sustainable Fisheries Management Project after spending two years in Ghana from January 2016–April 2017 as the project’s Chief of Party. This five-year project aimed to support Ghana’s national fisheries policies to rebuild marine fish stocks that are important to food security in Ghana as well as the West African region. While Brian served as CRC’s Interim Director from 2012-2014, he also directed the center’s International Program from 2004-2014, managing a portfolio of projects around the globe. Brian has over 30 years’ experience working in international development in Asia, Latin America and Africa in marine conservation, sustainable fisheries and integrated coastal management. Over the last five years, he has focused on small-scale fisheries in West Africa, where he has overseen the implementation of several USAID initiatives working on the development of ecosystem-based co-management approaches for fisheries that are critical to food security in West Africa, empowering women through improvements in the fisheries value chain, and establishing collective use rights for women oyster harvesters and sole fishermen in The Gambia. Brian is a former Peace Corps volunteer who served in Malaysia and the Philippines. He has a B.S. in Oceanography, and a M.A. and Ph.D. in Marine Affairs.
