Including Disability – Ableism vs. Disability Rights

This session is a discussion of the rights of individuals with disabilities to be included in academia in general and URI specifically and how ableism prevents disabled individuals from accessing these rights. The discussion will center on “What can we do to make that better? This sesssion will give participants an overview of the laws protecting the rights of persons with disabilities and how they should be applied at URI; and allow participant to gain a better understanding of ableism, its manifestation, and what to do about it.

This session focuses on: 1) the rights of individuals with disabilities in academia; 2) ableims and its impact on this community and what can be done to better support people with disabilities at URI and beyond.
