A part-time M.S. Program in Mechanical Engineering for Employees of Electric Boat and Surrounding Industries.
The University of Rhode Island is pleased to offer a part-time M.S. degree program in Mechanical Engineering for engineers working in southeastern Connecticut and southern Rhode Island. This program began in the Fall 2010 semester and many students have completed their M.S. degrees. New students are welcome to join the program at any time. Since URI allows students to take up to four courses as a non-matriculated student (prior to admission to a program), students can begin taking courses at any time.
We offer courses each fall, spring and summer semester. Classes are taught in the late afternoon or evening in the Westerly, RI area.
Note that we have phased out the Ocean Engineering program from our Westerly offerings. Students interested in Ocean Engineering are welcome to take courses offered in Westerly but will need to travel to the Kingston or Narragansett Bay Campus for many of their courses.
For mechanical engineering students, detailed degree requirements can be found in the MCE Graduate Student Guide. In brief, 30 credits (ten 3 credit courses) are required. One course is required from each of the three core areas of mechanical engineering: solid mechanics, thermal/fluids, and mechanical systems (see handbook for full list). Part-time graduate students may elect to pursue either a thesis or non-thesis option.
We offer courses each fall, spring and summer semester. Classes are taught in the late afternoon or evening in the Westerly, RI area. Non-thesis programs require 27 credits of coursework (9 courses) plus a 3-credit Special Problems course. Thesis programs require completion of 21 or 24 credits of coursework (7 or 8 courses) plus 6 or 9 credits of thesis research. Special problem courses and thesis research is normally done on an individual basis with a URI faculty advisor and may require some travel to the URI Kingston campus.
