Objectives and Outcomes

Program Mission

  • Provide high quality undergraduate and graduate education preparing students for successful careers in mechanical engineering, industrial and systems engineering and adjacent fields.
  • Conduct high quality research that reinforces and complements our educational goals, supports state, national, and global needs, and advances the state of knowledge in our many fields of study.
  • Provide professional expertise, service and outreach to local, national, and global industries and agencies.

Program Educational Objectives

Three to five years after graduation from the BS in Mechanical Engineering program, graduates will:

  • Successfully practice mechanical engineering to serve state, local, national, and international industries and government agencies.
  • Work professionally in one of the two major stems of mechanical engineering: mechanical and/or thermal systems or related fields.
  • Achieve personal and professional success with an understanding and appreciation of ethical behavior, social responsibility and diversity, both as individuals and in team environments.
  • Pursue continued lifelong learning through further graduate education, short courses or other training programs in engineering or related fields.

Student Outcomes

The student outcomes listed below prepare graduates to attain the program educational objectives.

  1. An ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics
  2. An ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental and economic factors. Identifies the procedures involved in designing an experiment
  3. An ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
  4. An ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts
  5. An ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
  6. An ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions
  7. An ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies
