One of the responsibilities of the Resident Academic Mentors (RAMs) in the Engineering Living Learning Community (ELLC) at the University of Rhode Island is to organize three events per semester that incorporate an academic component.

Among the most popular of these events each year is the liquid nitrogen ice cream social. By hand-mixing cream, milk, sugar, vanilla extract and rainbow sprinkles, the students turn what looks like a science experiment into a tasty treat in a matter of minutes.

This year, 50-60 students showed up at Chafee Hall on Feb. 8 to mingle and enjoy the homemade ice cream in one of the lecture halls. This was the third consecutive year the event was held.

The liquid nitrogen was donated by the URI Chemistry Department.
