A.B.M. in English

Admission to the Accelerated Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts (A.B.M.) in English program requires a minimum overall GPA of 3.3 and a GPA of 3.5 in the major. Applications for admission to this highly competitive program are due the summer prior to the senior year and will be accepted on a rolling basis up to June 15.

Visit the URI Graduate School website for instructions. To begin the application process, click on the Apply button. Select GradCAS, and then on the next screen select the Fall term of the application deadline year.

  • All relevant materials must be received by June 15. Only complete application files will be reviewed.
  • The Graduate School requires a non-refundable $65 application fee, plus Centralized Application System (CAS) fees. This fee is waived for students currently enrolled at URI. 
  • Notification of the Department’s admission decision will be sent via email by the Graduate School.

A successful applicant will have the following:

  • Completed 75 credit hours toward the NEW undergraduate English major at URI in order to apply; and 90 credit hours toward the NEW undergraduate English major to enroll
  • An overall 3.3 GPA; and a GPA of 3.5 in the major
  • A Statement of Purpose (approximately one single-spaced page) describing your academic training to date and why you chose to apply to the A.B.M. Program in English at URI
  • A completed Program of Study form
  • Two letters of recommendation from references familiar with your academic work and your potential for success in graduate study
  • A writing sample (preferably 10-15 pages in length) demonstrating capacity for close reading, effective argumentation, and research skills. If you wish to concentrate in creative writing, you may also submit a creative writing sample no longer than 10 pages in addition to the writing sample described above
  • CV or Resume
  • The GRE is not required
