Elizabeth Foulke

Biography

Elizabeth Foulke is working on a creative dissertation—a collection of essays on aloneness with a critical introduction. Her scholarly interests include the history and theory of the essay, spatial practices of the solitary female subject, and antebellum maritime literature.  She is the associate editor of The Ocean State Review. Her poetry has appeared in Plainsongs and The Wayfarer and her interview with Kenny Fries is in the most recent edition of The Ocean State Review.  Elizabeth is involved in a collaborative research project with The New Bedford Whaling Museum’s special collections and Dr. Mary Cappello’s advanced creative writing class. In her free time, she serves as a committee member and grant writer for the Newport Chapter of the Middle Passages Monument and Port Markers Project. Prior to entering a PhD program, Elizabeth taught English in urban public schools for twelve years where she shared her love of poetry and prose with a diverse group of students.
