What is a temporary course?
In UM 8.80.12, a temporary course is one that must meet one or more of the following:
- It is experimental in nature. It is innovative, using unconventional devices or pedagogical methods, course materials, approach to course content or student-teacher relationships.
- It is being tried out on a temporary basis so that its value and effectiveness can be tested before it is added to a department’s permanent curriculum.
- It is intended for a limited duration, such as in the case of employing a visiting specialist temporarily available or to satisfy temporary needs and interests of students or to deal with timely issues.
For additional manual language on temporary courses, please see the URI Course Glossary.
How to Propose a New Temporary Course in Kuali
- Open your Kuali Dashboard, and click “Courses” in the left-hand menu.
- To the right of the search bar, click the “+ New Course” button.
- From here, you will fill in the fields of the proposal form. Most are self-explanatory, but here are a few guidelines for some (not all) of the fields:
Under “General Information”
- College & Department
These inputs are the home college/department of the course, not necessarily the college/department of the proposer (though usually, it is).
Under “Course Information“
- Effective Term & Year
See Overview for Final Approvals - General Education
Temporary courses cannot be for General Education credit. Once you select the “no” radio button, you will be able to select a checkbox that indicates that this is a temporary (x) course.
- Do you need a new course code?
The answer is “no” if you are using a 3-letter course code that has already been established at URI. - Catalog-Ready Course Description:
See Anatomy of a Course Description
Under “Requirements for Enrollment“
- Rule Sets
At the moment, this is unnecessary. - Other Prerequisites
List all prerequisites for the course (corequisites, antirequisites, etc.)
Under “Rationale and Effect“
- Explain the purpose of the course.
This is important for reviewers who are not familiar with the content area.
- Check over your form. Ensure that your syllabus is attached, and that you have collected and uploaded all/any necessary letters of support. If you do not see a place to upload letters of support, you may upload them as another document attached under the syllabus.
- Click “Leave Edit Mode” in the upper right hand corner.
- Click “Submit to workflow” in the upper right hand corner.
Temporary Course Workflow
After a temporary course is submitted to the workflow by the proposer, the workflow will be as follows. Please remember every college and every department is a little bit different.

- Department Chair (if applicable)
- College Curriculum Committee
- College Dean
