Individuals who are in the US in a J-1 Research and/or Professor category may transfer their SEVIS record to another institution in the US to continue their J-1 program. If the research or teaching objective of stay remains the same and fits the description noted on the “Subject/Field Code Remarks” in box #4 of the DS-2019 form.
To initiate the transfer process to or from the University of Rhode Island the exchange visitor will need to communicate their intent to transfer with both the current and the new J-1 sponsors for the transfer to be executed.
Please Note:
- Gaps between the end date of activities at the current institution and the transfer date to the new sponsor are not allowed. This means the start date at the new institution must be the day immediately following the last day at the prior institution.
- A new DS-2019 form can only be issued by the new sponsor on or after the transfer date.
- Individuals who are transferring must not start their J-1 program at the new institution until the transfer date has been released and a new DS-2019 form has been issued.
- Traveling abroad is not needed to complete a transfer request.
