Looking Back at 2023

This was an exciting year for us at the Harrington School, filled with events and exciting opportunities for our students, faculty, and community. Looking back on 2023, these are some of our highlights:

Career Fair

In March, we hosted the first career fair for students since 2019. Students had the chance to learn more about companies in industries, including broadcast journalism, corporate communications, and more.

NYC Trip

More than 30 students from all Harrington majors took part in a day trip to New York City to learn about the industries they are interested in. The groups visited companies, including CBS News, NBA, and LinkedIn, where they met and spoke with professionals. After visiting companies, the groups attended a reception at MikeWorldWide, where they had the chance to meet prospective students and alums.

Senior Showcase and Honors Ceremony

At the Senior Showcase, students presented the work from their capstone courses. The showcase included trailers for student films, portfolio presentations, and research poster displays. After the showcase, we celebrated students who excelled in and out of the classroom at the Harrington Honors Ceremony.

National Day on Writing

In October, the Professional and Public Writing Department hosted the 7th annual National Day on Writing (NDOW) celebration at URI. Nearly 700 URI students participated in the two-day event that focused, this year, on Writing for Wellness. Activities included writing an epic poem about communal care, mapping writing support networks, and writing and designing six-word stories about overcoming challenges and composing recipes for daily wellness. The event culminated in WRT’s 20th birthday festivities.

Christiane Amanpour Lecture

This year’s Christiane Amanpour Lecture featured Mstyslav Chernov, a Pulitzer Prize-winning video journalist at the Associated Press and president of the Ukrainian Association of Professional Photographers. In his lecture “Reporting from the Front Lines,” Chernov spoke about his path to becoming a photojournalist and his experience reporting from the front lines of the war in Ukraine.

Taricani Lecture

The 2023 Taricani Lecture, entitled “Digging for Truth,” featured Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Caitlin Dickerson, whose reporting has been dedicated to uncovering hidden stories with real-life consequences. During the lecture, she discussed how her work has had a direct impact on those she has reported on.

Mentoring Event

Eleven Harrington alums came back to campus to offer advice and form mentoring relationships with current students at tube Harrington Mentoring Event. The alums come from a vast array of backgrounds and companies, including Hasbro, Cox Communications, and Amazon Web Services.
