“I applied for everything: the Rangel, Pickering, Marshall, Gilman, Demers, 3 Fulbrights, and, NALCAP. I had a strong interest in International Relations and building cross cultural exchange, so Kathleen mentioned that I would be competitive for a number of the applications.”
Political Science and Africana Studies, 2020
Why did you choose URI?
I was a commuter and transferred from CCRI. It was the most affordable option.
What have you been up to since graduation?
I currently work in higher Ed at Tufts University but plan on pursuing a career in the Foreign Service.
How were you involved in life at URI?
I was very involved in student government.
What awards did you apply for through ONFAO and why?
I applied for everything: the Rangel, Pickering, Marshall, Gilman, Demers, 3 Fulbrights, and, NALCAP. I had a strong interest in International Relations and building cross cultural exchange, so Kathleen mentioned that I would be competitive for a number of the applications.
How did you hear about these opportunities with ONFAO?
Kathleen [Maher] reached out to a number of students who should consider applying to the Fulbright Scholarship, and the rest is history!
How did ONFAO support/ equip you during the application process?
[ONFAO] helped me revise applications [and provided] advice on what applications to apply to, and how to make them stronger.
What did you gain from this experience?
I was able to learn Arabic remotely through a Gilman and Demers fellowship. Also, I explored Spain through the NALCAP program and I will be embarking on a Fulbright grant to the UK. Next, I hope to apply for a Rangel fellowship to join the FSO.
What would you tell students thinking about applying with ONFAO to help them prepare?
Even if you aren’t successful, applying for fellowships through ONFAO is super helpful to self reflect and understand your professional and personal goals.
