- Providence’s Betty Hasse is riding for another national championship - URI Junior Betty Hasse, majoring in mechanical engineering AND a student in the Honors Program, won back-to-back under-23 time trial gold medals at the USA Cycling national championships.
- Lina Altaan Al Hariri Gives Voice to Rhode Island Syrian Refugees - Lina Altaan Al Hariri is a triple major at URI graduating this spring (gender and women’s studies / global language and area studies - Arabic / political science). She did her senior project on the resettlement of Syrian refugees here in Rhode Island, a story of resilience and progress. Lina joins Bill Bartholomew to discuss her work.

- Six URI sophomores awarded 2024 NOAA Hollings Scholarships - Two honors students, Mary Brantley and Nicole Kobasa, are among the recipients of the nationally competitive National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship for 2024. The award is the most prestigious scholarship granted to undergraduates in the marine and atmospheric sciences.
- The Future of Textiles in Rhode Island - The University of Rhode Island will host its first “Future Textiles Forum” on Monday, April 22, with the participation of URI students and faculty from across the University, from diverse programs — textiles and engineering — as well as members of the Rhode Island Textile Innovation Network (RITIN) and other textile industry partners, and representatives from U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse’s office.
- Kimball Foundation establishes scholarship for URI Honors Program - The Horace A. and S. Ella Kimball Foundation recently made a $100,000 gift to the University of Rhode Island to establish the Thomas F. Black Jr. Scholarship to support a junior in the URI Honors Program who takes an interest in the nonprofit sector.
- River Stories - Professor Heather Johnson’s HPR 412 students examine rivers through history, culture, literature, and ecology. And they gain firsthand knowledge of rivers by going straight to the source.
- 2024 Honors Colloquium to examine ‘Democracy in Peril’ - Brian Krueger, Ashlea Rundlett, Marc Hutchison and Elizabeth Mendenhall will lead this year’s 2024 Honors Colloquium, URI’s premier public lecture series, examining ‘Democracy in Peril.’ The free annual educational forum brings experts to the University annually to examine issues of national and local relevance; the series will open in September.

- French consul general visits URI to recognize faculty, France-URI connections - Mustafa Soykurt, consul general of France in Boston, celebrated two URI faculty members, including Honors Director Karen de Bruin, after they were named chevaliers in the Ordre des Palmes Académiques by the French government (French for “knight” in the “Order of Academic Palms”) for their work in the U.S. and abroad.
