Residence Halls close for end of semester breaks at noon the day after finals week For the 2025-2026 Academic Year, halls close at noon on Friday, May 8th, 2026. Please check our important dates page and/or communications from our office for more information. Generally, we ask residents to check out 24 hours after their last final, or by that established date, whichever comes first. When you are finished moving out, please make sure to complete a checkout with your hall staff. Residence hall access will turn off for everyone without confirmed interim/summer housing when halls close. More details about spring closing and the checkout process will be shared in the coming weeks.
Need to stay beyond May 8?
If you need to stay in housing beyond hall closing on May 8, even for a day or two, you need to submit the Summer 2026 Housing Application by April 30. This application is now available in the URI My Housing portal. If you need a few extra days because you are participating in Commencement or waiting for a flight, you can request to stay with us through May 17 (at no cost!). If you meet one of the summer housing eligibility requirements, you can submit the application to stay with us through August 20, 2026. Summer housing runs from May 17 to August 20 and costs $266/week (up to $3,724 for 14 weeks). [Please note, to facilitate transition to summer assignments, students currently living in Brookside Hall and Gateway Apartments may be required to relocate to an alternate space during May 8-17].
Preparing to go
Set aside items to donate
For the second year, Housing will be partnering with Rhody Repurpose to collect, distribute, and donate gently used goods during finals week. In particular, items that are in good, clean condition may be donated. Further details about accepted items and dropoff locations will be communicated once finalized, but here’s an article from last year to give an idea.
Update your mailing address
Once Spring 2026 Housing ends, Union Express will only process mail and deliveries for Summer 2026 residents (see below). All mail and deliveries received for anyone else over the summer will be returned to the sender; we cannot hold it or forward it to you. With this in mind, please remember to update your mailing address. Fall 2026 residents may resume sending mail to Union Express on August 20, 2026.
Moving items out
Headed home to visit before finals? You might want to bring some items with you that you won’t need for the rest of the semester. This will help reduce the number of vehicles or trips you need to make later. HRL is not able to offer storage for personal items over the summer; however, there are local storage businesses. Anything left behind at closing will be considered abandoned property and will be disposed of or donated. Students are required to leave the room in the same condition as at move-in. During move out, please only use approved parking lots or along the road ways without blocking traffic. Use of sidewalks or pedestrian walkways is strictly prohibited.
Fully checking out of your space
- Remove all personal items from all residential spaces
- Empty your trash and take it to the dumpsters outside
- Check that your heat is left on, set to the lowest setting
- Turn off all lights
- Close blinds
- Close and secure all windows and doors
- Ensure the space is left clean and empty, ready for the next occupant. We encourage you to reference our cleaning guide for tips.
- Check out with a Housing staff member, or through the Express Checkout option in the URI My Housing portal. Please note, this checkout cannot be undone and will turn your card access off, so ensure this is the final step in your checkout process.
- For individuals checking out during the academic year, please note that simply moving out does not automatically adjust your billing. Keep an eye on departmental communications regarding cancelation request processes and charge adjustment processes.
