The objective of Family Life Education (FLE) is to improve the quality of individual and family life. Family life educators use a variety of methods and settings to provide training to people who want to be more effective family members. A few examples of how FLE can strengthen families include:
- Anger management and co-parenting workshops for divorcing couples with children
- Promoting family-friendly workplace policies
- Public service campaigns to increase awareness of the importance of strong marriages and families
- Developing curriculum and teaching classes for parents
The National Council on Family Relations (NCFR) has approved the undergraduate academic program of Human Development and Family Science for provisional certification of students. As an undergraduate student, you may apply for a provisional certificate to become a Certified Family Life Educator (CFLE).
Provisional certification is available to those with a bachelor’s degree and coursework in all ten family life content areas. URI’s Human Development and Family Science department has identified the pre-approved courses that qualify students for this provisional certification from NCFR. (CFLE Substitution for HDF 437)
To obtain your certification, once have graduated you can follow the Abbreviated Application Process on the NCFR website.
HDF students may become members prior to graduation and have two options to become members prior to provisional certification and pay the member rate for the Abbreviated Application fee (student membership and two journals or student membership and one journal).
