Licensure and Portability
The URI Couple and Family Therapy (CFT) Program prepares students for professional practice as marriage and family therapists. MFT licensure requirements are determined by each state and may change over time.
Rhode Island Licensure
The URI CFT curriculum is designed to meet the educational and clinical training requirements for MFT licensure in Rhode Island.
After graduation, students must complete the additional requirements established by the Rhode Island Department of Health to obtain MFT licensure.
Licensure in Other States
Licensure requirements vary by state. States may have different requirements for education, clinical training, supervision, examinations, and post-graduate supervised experience.
URI has not determined whether the CFT curriculum meets the educational requirements for MFT licensure in every state or jurisdiction.
Students planning to practice outside of Rhode Island should review the requirements of the state where they plan to practice and contact that state’s licensing board.
Portability
There is no single national MFT license. Licenses are issued by individual states, and a license in one state does not automatically transfer to another state.
The URI CFT Program can provide documentation of students’ education and clinical training for licensure applications. The licensing board in each state determines whether a graduate meets its requirements.

Student Acknowledgment
Before beginning the CFT Program, students are required to review information about licensure and degree portability and acknowledge their responsibility to understand the requirements of any state in which they plan to practice.
