Local Fall Activities

As the weather is beginning to feel more crisp and the leaves are changing, I will take any opportunity I can to indulge in fall activities. From pumpkin picking, drinking warm cider, and driving through a long back road, my weekend was spent outdoors in the October air.

Follow along if you are looking for some activities, in and around Rhode Island this fall!

Growing up, my family always went apple picking in October. We spent the day running around apple orchards, my brothers tossing a football in the air, and my dad stealing a bite from an apple on a tree.

So, what better way to continue the tradition than to go apple picking with my roommates? This weekend, I took a trip to Clyde’s Cider Mill in Connecticut and then stopped by Clark Farms on the way back to Rhode Island. Though Clyde’s was all too busy, Clark Farms was bustling with excitement and had a large variety of pumpkins and apples.

Even though the apples were already bagged up and you simply had to choose which batch looked best, the experience of being at a local farm for fall activities was worth it. If you are looking for a more hands-on apple picking experience, check out Narrow Lane Orchard in North Kingstown and Rocky Brook Orchard in Middletown! These orchards allow you to pick your own apples and pay by the bag’s weight.

While at Clark Farms, my roommates and I walked around the fields trying to find the perfect pumpkin to carve. With all different shapes, colors, and sizes, we decided to get the classic orange pumpkin, a white pumpkin, and one that was a bit out of shape. There were so many options to choose from which made the experience even better.

Near the checkout line, there was also a stand with fresh fruits and vegetables like butternut squash and apples. So with a bag of Macintosh apples in one hand and a butternut squash in another, I walked out of the farm with my hands full!

Because it was a long weekend, all of the places I visited this weekend were very crowded. When my roommates and I got to Clyde’s Cider Mill, it was almost impossible to find parking or a place to sit. So we quickly decided to glance around the area, stop in a few of the shops, and head back home.

If you are over 21 and a wine drinker like myself, I recommend grabbing a bottle of wine from Clyde’s Cider Mill while you are there. There are free samples with fun flavors like Raspberry Apple and Strawberry Apple! It is a perfect place to sit back and relax in the fall air.

If you are under 21 and looking for something to drink, there are non-alcoholic options like an apple slushy and apple cider. There is also a market store with apple butter, donuts, pies, and so much more! I will definitely be making a trip back to Clyde’s Cider Mill in the upcoming weeks for round two!

Because Halloween is just around the corner, going to a haunted house in the fall is a must. I am always on the hunt for a spooky hayride, a scary corn maze, or a quick ghost ride. Though I didn’t participate in any of those activities this week, next week I plan on getting into the Halloween spirit.

Rhode Island has lots of haunted hayrides, houses, and corn mazes. If you are looking for something scary, check out Scary Acres in Hope! Check out one of their three attractions like a hayride, a haunted house, the haunted burial grounds, or all three! 13th World is in Cumberland, Rhode Island, and is also a huge hit for people who love haunted houses. They have been running a haunted house for the past 21 years and incorporate some of your favorite horror movie characters.

If a scary atmosphere is not what you are looking for, I have even more fall suggestions for you!

At the Roger Williams Zoo, they hold a Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular that runs almost every night from 6:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. until October 31. It is a walkway with artistically carved pumpkins that are lit up from the inside. If you want to enjoy a beautiful fall day, check out some of the local fall festivals around Rhode Island! Recently, I have been exploring some local farmers markets with fall activities.

I hope this October you are able to participate in some of these amazing fall activities. Thank you for reading this week’s blog, and stay tuned for next week!
