Nahoko Collis

Biography

Born in Kyoto, Nahoko Collis is an Associate Teaching Professor of Japanese at the University of Rhode Island. Since joining URI in 2020, she has taught the entire four year curriculum of Japanese language courses, as well as content courses such as “JPN310 Japanese Languages and Cultures” and “JPN 460 Reading Japan.”  Her primary goal as a teacher is to create an engaging and effective learning environment that encourages students to pursue life-long autonomous learning. With a focus on community, connectivity, and co-learning, she is passionate about student-centered, collaborative initiatives, including peer tutoring, Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL), and game-enhanced language learning. Additionally, she is actively engaged with the Japanese-speaking community in Rhode Island, inspiring her to create outreach programs between URI and local K-12 schools.
