A Vision for A Post-Industrial Seekonk River Corridor

Fall 2017

This semester-long project focused on developing a sustainable vision for a Post-Industrial urban corridor along the Seekonk River. Working with the Seekonk Riverbank Revitalization Alliance and Providence and East Providence planners, this interdisciplinary LAR studio analyzed community needs, land uses and environmental conditions for a vulnerable area along the Seekonk River. The class ran a public workshop and participated in a studio charrette.

This led to their developing design concepts including: an under-highway park, a remediated brownfield and various examples of green infrastructure. They also designed a butterfly garden, boardwalk and marsh restoration; introduced native plantings, boat launches, bridge crossings, and a new boulevard along with bicycle and pedestrian connections. Their work was presented to a group from Providence and East Providence and later to the East Providence City Council.
