Lecture Title: Affordable Housing and the Consequences of Public Engagement

Peter Trowbridge is currently the Chair and a Professor of the Department of Landscape Architecture. He has been engaged in planning, design and implementation of works of Landscape Architecture for over thirty-five years. His innovative professional methods and techniques include the most contemporary and best “green” environmental practices and technologies as well as forward looking implementation strategies. He brings these technologies, practices, and strategies into the classroom, influencing the next generation of teachers and practitioners.

Peter has been a member of the Department of Landscape Architecture since 1976. Prior to coming to Cornell, he worked for several private sector firms in the Boston area and Syracuse, New York. Since coming to Ithaca, he has also been a partner in the firm Trowbridge and Wolf, LLP, Landscape Architects. His professional work, focusing upon institutions of higher education, has received numerous awards from the American Society of Landscape Architects, ASLA, and other state and national societies. He was named a Fellow of the ASLA in 1996.

He has served as an editor of the Landscape and Urban Planning Journal. He is also the former Chair of National Landscape Architecture Accreditation Board, LAAB, and past President of the New York Upstate Chapter of ASLA. He is a former member of the Executive Board of the Council of Education in Landscape Architecture, CELA. He is currently a nominee for the New York State Licensing Board.

Peter is the recipient of the SUNY Chancellors Award for Excellence in Teaching, the 2010 Martin Dominguez Award for Distinguished Teaching, recognized by a Merrill Scholar as the most influential teacher, and the Professor of Merit Award for Outstanding Teaching and Advising from the Class of 2010 of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Cornell University.

In 2004, he published a textbook, Plant Establishment and the Urban Environment with Dr. Nina Bassuk 1974, who is also his wife. He co-teaches with Nina a year-long class entitled Creating the Urban Eden as well as design studios and technology courses in the Department of Landscape Architecture.

Peter and Nina have two daughters and reside in Ithaca, New York.
