A recent Master of Marine Affairs at the University of Rhode Island, Vanessa Anderson was recognized as the recipient of the ‘William J. Torpey Memorial Scholarship’ awarded by the Propeller Club of Narragansett Bay. The scholarship was founded to assist students who are pursuing careers related to the Maritime Industry.
The $1,500 award was presented at the ‘2018 Maritime Person of the Year’ event held on May 29th, 2018 in Providence, Rhode Island. The event also celebrated Governor Gina M. Raimondo as the ‘Maritime Person of the Year’ for her contributions to the maritime industry.

Vanessa attended SUNY Maritime College in New York City and worked for roughly 10 years as a vessel operator and trader within the industry before returning home to Rhode Island to pursue a career based in the environmental sector.
Vanessa is currently employed part-time as a Research Assistant within the Science Education Department at the University of Rhode Island on a National Science Foundation project until September. In addition, she works as a data research analyst for climatology scientist Dr. Hal Needham the founder of ‘Marine Weather and Climate LLC’ performing data-driven flood risk risk analysis for coastal cities. Vanessa is currently seeking full-time employment in Southern New England.
