This August, Dr. Amelia Moore and Jessica Vandenberg traveled to Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia, to participate in the Coral Restoration Workshop sponsored by IUCN, Paul G. Allen Philanthropies, and Mars Inc. The workshop focused on the feasibility and best practices of large scale reef building and restoration and involved coral researchers and conservation officials from around the world. Dr. Moore and Ms. Vandenberg have been working with Mars Inc. through their subsidiary Mars SymbioScience for two years to study the effects of community-based coral restoration efforts in the Spermonde Archiplego of Indonesia. This workshop was an opportunity for them to present their work to a larger team of coral specialists and to ensure that social considerations were given priority in the growing conversation about the future of global coral restoration.
