Professor Thompson spent about two weeks in Papua Indonesia in May to work with the Papuan government on Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) issues. While there he met with faculty and students at Universitas Cenderwasih and gave a public lecture on MSP. He met with Papuan Senators, the Director of the Papua’s Planning Department, and the Director of Papua’s Department of Fisheries to discuss the initiation of their MSP process. He led a workshop open to government officials from all departments on Marine Spatial Planning. Finally, he visited key sites with representatives from the government and the university to see firsthand some of Papua’s coastal management challenges.
