Assistant Professor Elizabeth Mendenhall joined three alumni of the Marine Affairs Masters program on an educational oceanographic cruise through the Rhode Island Teachers-at-Sea program. During the cruise, Elizabeth worked alongside Brenda Dillman (class of 1987), Peter Hanlon (class of 2001), and Asta Habtemichael (class of 2019), and several other teachers from Rhode Island to learn oceanographic tools and techniques. Under the direction of David Smith, Associate Dean of the Graduate School of Oceanography, the teachers took and analyzed sediment core and water column samples on the edge of the New England continental shelf. While learning about oceanography and oceanographic cruises, the “Teachers at Sea” also discussed Rhode Island students, science education, and incorporating research into the classroom.
