Port Planning and Policy class visits port of Newport

The MAF 564 Port Planning and Policy class visited the Port of Newport on Friday April 8th, 2022.  Several tours and briefs were enjoyed by the students.  The Newport Harbormaster discussed the uniqueness of management and operations in Newport Harbor, which is primarily a port dedicated to support sailing, sailing races, yachts, and cruise ships.  From the Harbormaster’s office, the class walked over to Bowens Wharf and boarded the SSV Oliver Hazard Perry, a replica of an early 19th century frigate.  The Perry’s Captain provided a great tour and a discussion regarding the ship’s on-board youth maritime training programs.  From there, the class drove over to the U.S. Coast Guard Station Castle Hill for a tour and brief regarding the station’s missions (primarily search and rescue) and area of responsibility.  The tour included boarding one the station’s four fast response boats.  For the spring 2022 semester, the class has or will visit the ports of Mystic Seaport, Davisville/Quonset, Providence, Newport, and New Bedford. Major themes for the course include coastal hazard resiliency, the Blue Economy/Smart Bay, carbon emissions reduction, and offshore wind energy support.
