Background: Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and Spanish majors from the University of Michigan

Profile:

Haley is a MAMA student with an interest in small scale fisheries, local ecological knowledge, and environmental justice. She grew up in East Greenwich, Rhode Island before moving to Michigan where she received a double major in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and Spanish from the University of Michigan. During her time as an undergrad, she worked as a research assistant in an aquatic disease ecology laboratory and was awarded high honors for her senior thesis exploring virulence evolution in the planktonic crustacean Daphnia dentifera. Her work was later published in Evolutionary Ecology.

Haley also worked as an aquatic field intern for the Huron River Watershed Council studying erosion risk, and invasive species. After graduating, she spent a year teaching English to high school students in Granada, Spain before returning home to Rhode Island. She continued her work in watershed conservation with the Woonasquatucket River Watershed Council. With this nonprofit, she worked as a summer bike camp instructor and later as a community resilience liaison, organizing environmental leadership training programs for Spanish-speaking residents of Olneyville. These experiences pushed her in the direction of marine affairs, as she wanted to focus on issues that affect real people and work directly with communities in addition to scientists. Haley enjoys traveling and in her free time loves swimming, soccer and crochet.
