Profile:
Jonathan Kabak is a professional mariner and maritime educator here in Rhode Island. With an extensive professional career centered on community engagement in maritime spaces, Jonathan’s work focuses on building profound connections and safety skills for community members to better experience and enjoy life at sea. Specific areas of interest to Jonathan include equitable access to ocean information and experiences, as well as regulatory procedures that assist professional mariners throughout their careers. Community leadership, project management, and regulatory measures are Jonathan’s forte, as he has been involved in a multitude of roles centered on the coordination and implementation of maritime policy over the years.
Jonathan is currently the CEO and Captain of the Oliver Hazard Perry, a Rhode Island based non-profit organization that connects civilians with the water through hands-on learning experiences and on the water trainings. He is also an instructor of STCW and Coast Guard approved courses for maritime professionals. Jonathan serves on several committee boards, including US Sailing Safety at Sea, Tall Ships America, and the United States Maritime Resource Center. Through many avenues, Jonathan consistently contributes curriculum development and implementation of vital resources centered around maritime education for the community. Jonathan holds a Bachelor’s degree in History from Franklin Pierce University and is currently pursuing a Masters of Marine Affairs at the University of Rhode Island. Outside of the professional space, Jonathan’s passions consist of maritime history, wood working, craft cooking, and sailboat cruising with his family.
