MAF 422, Applied Climate Science

Required for : Elective

Typically Taught By : Ambarish Karmalkar

Applies climate science to real-world environmental, planning, and policy problems.

This course is designed to introduce students to the practical applications of climate science. We discuss the complex relationships between climate and other environmental systems—ecological, hydrological, and those related to human health and urban settings—and tools and models that facilitate risk assessment and decision making. The course is divided into three modules: (1) background climate science, (2) data analysis, and (3) application case studies. The course begins with an introduction to weather and climate extremes, and the impacts on natural and human resources. We then discuss the analysis of climate data from various sources, and practical applications of climate science through case studies. Students learn about best practices for using climate data in various applications and develop their real-world problem-solving skills by working on their topic of choice for a final project. The course has a lab component involving climate data analysis.
