Required for : Elective

Typical Semester : Spring

Typically Taught By : Hilda Lloréns

Examines islands as social, political, and ecological spaces.

Islands have always been material and symbolic manifestations of complex social and ecological processes.  Today, islands have renewed meaning in the present era of global change in which living and working on islands and managing island systems have become politically charged actions. This course is an upper-level seminar on the evolving political, ecological, and social understanding of islands and the condition of “islandness.” The course will explore relevant cases and examples of island-based problems and arguments, drawing primarily from the Caribbean and the Pacific regions, North America, Europe, and the “Earth as island.” Course readings will stem from Anthropology, Ecology and Natural History, Islands Studies, Pacific Island Studies, Caribbean Studies, Decoloniality, Literature, and Environmental Justice.
