Examines legal and policy frameworks governing fisheries management.
In this course we will examine marine fisheries policy and management (i.e., governance) in relation to different actors and across different levels (local, regional, national, and international), and from multiple perspectives (biology, ecology, economics, anthropology, public policy, and political science). Through a thematic and case study approach and based on an interdisciplinary perspective we will identify and analyze various institutional structures and governance arrangements and in the process gain a better understanding of their dynamics and outcomes. Lastly, we will gain better insights on how marine fisheries in Rhode Island and the New England region are shaped by complex interactions and relationships among culture (i.e., societal beliefs, views, and values), politics, and economy. Syllabus available upon request.
