Examines U.S. federal institutions responsible for ocean policy.
This course will introduce students to the history and practice of U.S. ocean policy and governance. It will use the ways in which science and politics come together to influence public policy decisions as a lens to understand the role of stakeholders, agencies, and individuals in crafting decisions about marine resource management. We will examine pressing ocean policy issues and investigate the complexity of ocean-related decision-making. In doing so, students will learn about how science and politics intersect within policy making and the subsequent tradeoffs made in meeting these challenges. Students will also learn how to engage with public decision-making processes through hands on exercises and group work.
