Master of Music in Music Performance
Program Requirements
A minimum of 30 credits is required for graduation.
The M.M. in Music Performance requires:
- 12 credits of performance in MUS 510 (minimum of 3 in a semester) appropriate to the music performance option selected and the principal applied music area, plus
- MUS 548 (Research in Music), MUS 550 (Graduate Performance Recital) or 552 (Graduate Composition Recital), appropriate to the option selected
- MUS 567: Seminar in Performance and Pedagogy
- MUS 580: Master Of Music Portfolio I
- MUS 581: Master Of Music Portfolio II
- and 3 credits distributed according to the music performance option selected
The requirements for each option are:
Voice or Instrument Option:
- For vocalists
- 2 credits in MUS 598 (Chamber Music Ensemble) and one credit music elective
- All 12 performance credits must be in MUS 510A (Applied Music – Voice), concluding with MUS 550 (Graduate Performance Recital) in the last semester of applied music study
- Vocalists must be proficient in English, German, French, Italian, and Latin diction, and have general phonetic knowledge and skills that can be applied to other languages. Such proficiency includes language competency sufficient to understand texts in the repertory. The proficiency examination includes written and sung portions, and is given by the instructor of vocal diction. Vocalists may wish to take MUS 583 Vocal Diction to meet the proficiency levels required.
- For pianists
- 2 credits in MUS 590 (Piano Accompanying) or 598 (Chamber Music Ensemble) and one credit music elective
- All 12 performance credits must be in MUS 510B (Applied Music – Piano), concluding with MUS 550 (Graduate Performance Recital) in the last semester of applied music study
- For guitarists, and other instrumentalists
- 2 credits in MUS 598 (Chamber Music Ensemble) and one credit music elective
- All 12 performance credits must be in the principal applied music area (MUS 510E-U, or W), concluding with MUS 550 (Graduate Performance Recital) in the last semester of applied music study
Conducting Option
- 3 credits of electives appropriate to conducting
- All 12 performance credits must be in MUS 510Y (Choral Conducting) and/or 510Z, (Instrumental Conducting) concluding with MUS 550 (Graduate Performance Recital) in the last semester of applied music study
Composition Option:
- 3 credits of electives appropriate to composition
- All 12 performance credits must be in MUS 510V (Applied Music – Composition), concluding with MUS 552 (Graduate Composition Recital) in the last semester of applied music study.
All performance candidates must also take 9 credits of electives in music history, music theory, or applied areas other than in the student’s music performance option, and pass a written comprehensive examination in music history, music theory, and the performance option after 15 hours have been completed.
