My teaching is informed by practices that promote respect for human dignity, global understanding, cultural sensitivity, and compassion. Over the last two semesters, my education majors and I have joined hands with Citizen Schools (citizenschools.org) in six Boston area middle schools, where we work with 5th, 6th, and 7th graders on a wide range of curriculum explorations—from health and wellness to computers and sign language and breakdancing. As a teacher, I challenge my students to counter racial and linguistic barriers which preclude our youth from achieving their goals. To the extent possible, I listen to their experiences, offer support, and celebrate their achievements. I “walk the walk” with my students so that my teaching and being are authentic.
