Born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Charlene grew up in Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu, which borders Rwanda. Her childhood was surrounded by conflict, as the Rwandan genocide brought decades of conflict and war to her country. She says she is blessed that her parents and grandparents taught her peace and love, and she thrived. She decided to join the nonviolence training at URI because she always dreamed about working for peace and quality in the Congo. Charlene says that, “the Institute is going to be a great experience for me because I will go back home and teach others what I have learned.” This past year, she studies at McPherson College in Kansas, and she will transfer in the Fall to Hope International University in Fullerton, CA., majoring in Women’s Studies and Sociology.
