Perry’s Short Biography
Perry Garfinkel, a contributor to The New York Times since 1986, is the author of the 2006 national bestseller “Buddha or Bust.” His newest book, “Becoming Gandhi,” published in January 2024, was named one of the top 10 books to watch for by Publishers Weekly. A former reporter and editor, he has written about psychology, health, spirituality, travel, and cultural trends. For National Geographic Magazine, he wrote a major feature about socially engaged Buddhism, which appeared as the cover story in 24 international editions. He has practiced meditation since his first travels to India in the 1970s. A percussionist since early in his life, he still plays drums with jazz and blues bands.
