A Tribute to Dr. Arthur Benjamin Stein (Art)

Dr. Arthur Benjamin Stein (Art), a cherished father, husband, brother, friend, and mentor, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 24, 2025, surrounded by his devoted family. He served as a Professor Emeritus in the Political Science Department at the University of Rhode Island. He was a founding member of the URI Center for Nonviolence and Peace Studies.
Professor Stein dedicated over fifty years to URI, establishing himself as a
distinguished scholar in political science and spirituality. He is honored for his
unwavering commitment to nonviolent activism and for imparting teachings of
peace and nonviolence around the world. Dr. Stein received the International
Nonviolence Trainer’s Award
from the URI Center for Nonviolence and Peace
Studies in 2024. His significant contributions include several acclaimed books,
such as “Seeds of the Seventies: Values, Work, and Commitment in Post-Vietnam
America” and “Let There Be Light: Experiencing Inner Light Across the World’s
Sacred Traditions.”
Beyond his academic accomplishments, Dr. Stein was known for his exceptional
mentorship, guiding countless college students to success throughout the years. His
humility, wisdom, and genuine compassion for all were profound and infectious.
His family characterized his life as “defined by compassion, curiosity, and joy.” His
absence will be felt deeply by all who had the honor of knowing him.
Dr. Stein is survived by his loving wife, Clare Sartori; his daughters, Lisa Stein and
Arielle Stein (husband Bryan Hughes); his brothers, Harold Stein (wife Nancy) and
Chuck Stein (wife Vicki); and numerous beloved nieces, nephews, and extended
family.
Our thoughts are firmly with his family, friends, and loved ones as they celebrate
his remarkable life and enduring legacy.
