Level 1 Kingian Nonviolence and Conflict Reconciliation Training
2-Week Certification Program
Dates: Monday, July 13 – Friday, July 24 , 2026. Time: 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM
This two-week intensive Level 1 training provides an introduction to the Kingian nonviolence conflict reconciliation course and the teach-back practice. Participants will explore key concepts and essential background information about nonviolence, including core values, conflict analysis, nonviolent historical movements, dynamics of social change, and critical essays written by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Learning is facilitated through instructional methods, interactive small-group activities, and various training exercises. Evening discussions and dialogue opportunities will complement the daytime sessions. Additionally, there may be afternoon or evening assessments, teach-back practices, facilitation rehearsals, and demonstrations of simulated workshop sessions. To obtain final certification as a Level 1 nonviolence trainer, participants must demonstrate mastery of basic Kingian nonviolence concepts and successful workshop facilitation skills by the conclusion of the Institute.

Level 2 Advanced Nonviolence Leadership Training
1-Week Certification Program
Dates: Monday, July 20 – Friday, July 24, 2025. Time: 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM
The Level 2 course offers an in-depth study of Kingian nonviolence methodology, including a brief review of the Level 1 curriculum, leadership characteristics, historical and organizational analysis, social action research, and community organizing strategies. The emphasis is on leadership development and continued involvement in nonviolent education and training efforts. The training format includes seminars, small group discussions, individual study, and team activities. Level 2 certification as a nonviolence leader and trainer requires demonstrating advanced knowledge and understanding of nonviolence through the study and analysis of nonviolent leaders, organizations, or movements.

21-Day Nonviolence Training and Cultural Education Program
Dates: Sunday, July 12 – Saturday, August 1, 2026
This 21-day program is suitable for international participants who wish to apply for and attend the training on a J-1 visa. During the first week, participants will undergo introductory and Level 1 training in the Kingian nonviolence conflict reconciliation course, covering key concepts and essential background information about nonviolence. You will explore core values, conflict analysis, nonviolent historical movements, dynamics of social change, and several critical essays by Dr. King. The course encourages interactive learning through small-group activities and evening discussions. After completing the assessments, the participant will receive Level I Nonviolence Training of Trainers.
In the second week, participants will prepare to become certified Level 2 Nonviolence Trainers with an advanced study on Kingian nonviolence methodology, including a review of the Level 1 curriculum, leadership characteristics, and community mobilization strategies. This week will focus on nonviolent leadership development and further involvement in nonviolent education.
The third week allows individual consultations with the Center and university faculty and opportunities to attend local events. While there is no structured training this week, participants can visit other regional institutions.

The (on-campus ) Apartment-Style Garrahy Residence Hall, air-conditioned apartments of 4-10 single bedrooms (full beds), shared kitchen, living area, and bathrooms will cost per person – $1500.00 for twenty nights.
Refund Policy:
The $100 registration fee and Eventbrite fees are nonrefundable. Refund requests for the course and housing fees must be initiated on Eventbrite, and a cancellation note must be sent to summerinstitute@etal.uri.edu at least fourteen (14) business days before the course start date. Refund requests cannot be accepted within two weeks (14 business days) of the training start date. All refunds will be processed to the original payment method only. By registering, you agree to this refund policy.
Note: Thanks for your interest in the International Nonviolence Summer Institute. The Center staff may ask you for additional information or documents for international participants to write them invitation letters. Please note that payment of the $100 registration fee is required to complete your application/registration. You may pay the tuition and housing fees before the training begins.
