About:

A former police captain in Rio de Janeiro, Etiene was responsible for the police pacification project in advance of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Games and the 2016 Olympics. Realizing a potential for conflict between the authorities and community members residing in poverty stricken favelas, he embarked on nonviolence training at the URI Summer Institute to study alternative ways to approach conflict and social change. His nonviolence training was also important to his graduate studies and law degree. Etiene is now an appointed municipal judge and reports successfully using Kingian nonviolence every day to resolve disputes in his courtroom.
