The 25th Annual International Nonviolence Summer Institute 2024 will be an on-campus nonviolence training/conference experience! Join our excellent trainees from all over the world for a special and unique program!

One-Week Nonviolence Workshop                                                                           (1 Week Program) Monday, June 10 – Friday, June 14, from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM).

This workshop introduces you to the Kingian nonviolence conflict reconciliation course and critical concepts and essential background information about nonviolence, including core values, conflict analysis, nonviolent historical movements, dynamics of social change, and the study of several of the most critical essays written by Dr. King. Participants learn through instructional and interactive small-group activities, training exercises, and guest speakers. This program suits those who want to learn Kingian nonviolence but not the trainer’s certification or those who wish to continue next year for their certification due to the time limit.

Level 1 Kingian Nonviolence and Conflict Reconciliation Training           (2-Week Certification Program) Monday, June 10 – Friday, June 21, from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM).

The initial week of the Level I training consists of introductory training in the Kingian nonviolence conflict reconciliation course. It introduces key concepts and essential background information about nonviolence, including core values, conflict analysis, nonviolent historical movements, dynamics of social change, and the study of several of the most critical essays written by Dr. King. Participants learn through instructional and interactive small-group activities and training exercises; some evening discussions and dialogue opportunities supplement morning and afternoon sessions.

The second week of the training prepares participants to become certified trainers and workshop facilitators qualified to deliver a 16-hour Introductory Nonviolence Workshop. This training portion involves guided practice presentations, supervised facilitation rehearsals, and demonstrations of simulated workshop sessions. The participants will work with some certified trainers, including the Level 2 participants. Final certification as a Level I nonviolence trainer requires mastery of basic Kingian nonviolence concepts and successful demonstration of workshop facilitation skills by the conclusion of the Institute.

Level 2 Advanced Nonviolence Leadership Training                                         (1 Week Certification Program) Monday, June 17 – Friday, June 21, from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM.

The Level II course offers an in-depth study of Kingian nonviolence methodology, including a review of the Level I curriculum, leadership characteristics, historical and organizational analysis, social action research, and community organizing and mobilization strategies. Emphasis is on leadership development and continued involvement in nonviolence education and training efforts. The training uses a seminar, small group discussion format, individual study, and team
activities. Level II certification as a nonviolence leader and trainer expects to demonstrate advanced knowledge and understanding of nonviolence as represented through the study and analysis of nonviolent leaders, organizations, or movements.

The Level II trainers will also serve as a Teach-back guide for the new Level 1 participants. The Level 2 participants will guide practice presentations, supervised facilitation rehearsals, and demonstrations of simulated workshop sessions for Level 1, giving the opportunity to meet, share, and lead.

21-Day Nonviolence Training and Cultural Education Program Sunday, June 9 – 28.

This training portion involves guided practice presentations, supervised facilitation rehearsals, and demonstrations of simulated workshop sessions. The participants will work with some certified trainers, including the Level 2 participants. Final certification as a Level I nonviolence trainer requires mastery of basic Kingian nonviolence concepts and successful demonstration of workshop facilitation skills by the conclusion of the Institute.

The third week of this program allows you to take advantage of individual consultation with our Center and university faculty and meet and attend local events. Although there is no structured training during the third week, you will get opportunities to visit other institutions in the region.

Refund Policy: The $100 registration fee and Eventbrite fees are non-refundable. Refund requests for the course and housing fees must be initiated on Eventbrite and by Emailing a cancellation note to summerinstitute@etal.uri.edu up to fourteen (14) business days before the course start date. We cannot accept refund requests within two weeks (14) business days of the training start date. All refunds will be made to the original payment method only. By registering, you agree to the refund policy.

Note: Thanks for your interest in the International Nonviolence Summer Institute. The Center staff may ask you for additional information or documents for international participants to write them invitation letters. Please note that your application will only be completed after you pay the required registration fee. The tuition fees can be settled by May 10, 2024.
