Biography

I received my undergraduate degree from Brown University and my Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley. At Cal I studied coyote vocal communication and the potential to use behavioral ecology to address coyote predation on livestock. After a post-doctoral appointment at the University of Vermont, where I used occupancy and removal models to study bird communities in the state, I joined the National Park Service in 2005 to become the program manager for the Northeast Temperate Network (NETN) in Woodstock, VT. At NETN, I worked with network staff and partners to develop long term monitoring programs for ecological indicators, including breeding landbirds, forest health, rocky intertidal, and water quality. In 2015, I became the Southeast Region Chief of Inventory & Monitoring, where I oversaw the operations of 5 NPS monitoring networks. I returned to Rhode Island in 2022 to become a regional science advisor for the NPS and the research coordinator for the North Atlantic Coast Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit.

Research

I have broad experience in the design of long-term monitoring programs, the analysis of long-term monitoring data, and science-based natural resource management. I am currently overseeing a regional National Park Service effort to manage overabundant deer in parks. This includes implementing spotlight and wildlife camera monitoring, UAS censuses, development of deer management plans, and implementation of population reduction measures in multiple northeastern parks. Additionally, I am the NPS lead for the Science Communication in the Parks fellowship program, in collaboration with the Ecological Society of America (https://esa.org/programs/scip/).
