What is an Ombud?

An Ombud is an individual appointed to impartially resolve conflicts.


What can the Ombud do?

In general, ombuds:

  • Listen and help identify issues and courses of action;
  • Mediate conflict or disputes;
  • Guide and direct to the appropriate resources.

What can the Ombud not do?

Ombuds cannot:

  • Make any binding decision or overturn any policy;
  • Testify in any legal proceedings.

When should I contact the Ombud?

Any university-related concern can be brought to the Ombud.


Will my confidentiality be kept?

One of the guiding principles of the Ombud office is confidentiality, so your confidentiality will be kept when communicating with the office.


How can the Ombud help me?

  • Facilitate a difficult conversation or meeting
  • Strategize the most appropriate techniques for an ongoing issue or concern
  • Help to develop and evaluate different courses of action
  • Mediate disagreements or misunderstandings
  • Identify constructive processes for working through challenging situations
