Gut-Brain Synergy: Empowering The Pharmacy Team to Enhance Mental Health and Gut Health
Thursday November 7th, 2024
8:00 AM – 2:30 PM
Live via Zoom
The human body is home to trillions of microbes, the vast majority of which reside in the gut. Understanding the roles the gut microbiome can play throughout the body can provide valuable insight into the interplay between microorganisms and their impact on human health and disease. Thus, the theme for the 67th Annual Heber W. Youngken, Jr. ‘Last Chance’ Clinic is “Gut-Brain Synergy: Empowering the Pharmacy Team to Enhance Mental Health and Gut Health.” The clinic will provide 5 live contact hours (0.5 CEUs) of continuing pharmacy education credit for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, including immunization and Pharmacy Law CE. Discussions will focus on the gut-brain axis and the gut microbiota dysbiosis that is often observed in various disease states. Talks will cover traditional diseases linked with the microbiome such as Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) and others linked to the gut-brain axis such as depression, anxiety, and ADHD. Discussions will cover traditional pharmacological treatment and non-pharmacological options, including natural products, that can promote overall wellness and a healthy gut microbiome. Topics and speakers for discussion include: Pharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians in all practice settings. Session specific learning objectives for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians can be found in the detailed program agenda. All participants will have the opportunity to review the educational sessions and speakers and to identify future educational needs. In accordance with the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) Standards for Continuing Pharmacy Education, The University of Rhode Island College of Pharmacy requires that program faculty disclose any relationship (e.g., shareholder, recipient of research grant, consultant or member of an advisory committee) that the faculty may have with commercial companies whose products or services may be mentioned in their presentations. No one involved in the planning of this program has any relevant financial relationships to disclose.
