67th Annual Heber W. Youngken, Jr. “Last Chance” Pharmacy Clinic

Gut-Brain Synergy: Empowering The Pharmacy Team to Enhance Mental Health and Gut Health

Thursday November 7th, 2024
8:00 AM – 2:30 PM

Live via Zoom

Overview

The human body is home to trillions of microbes, the vast majority of which reside in the gut. Understanding the roles the gut microbiome can play throughout the body can provide valuable insight into the interplay between microorganisms and their impact on human health and disease. Thus, the theme for the 67th Annual Heber W. Youngken, Jr. ‘Last Chance’ Clinic is “Gut-Brain Synergy: Empowering the Pharmacy Team to Enhance Mental Health and Gut Health.”

The clinic will provide 5 live contact hours (0.5 CEUs) of continuing pharmacy education credit for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, including immunization and Pharmacy Law CE.

Discussions will focus on the gut-brain axis and the gut microbiota dysbiosis that is often observed in various disease states. Talks will cover traditional diseases linked with the microbiome such as Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) and others linked to the gut-brain axis such as depression, anxiety, and ADHD. Discussions will cover traditional pharmacological treatment and non-pharmacological options, including natural products, that can promote overall wellness and a healthy gut microbiome. Topics and speakers for discussion include:

  • 8:15 AM – The Role of the Gut Microbiome in Human Health and Disease – Judy Magalhaes, PharmD, BCGP, CDCES – Functional Pharmacist & Wellness Coach
  • 9:15 AM – ADHD Therapeutic Updates – Kelly Matson, PharmD, BCPPS, FPPA – URI College of Pharmacy Clinical Professor
